Why the wrecking ball was consigned to history…

Video showing why the crawler crane and wrecking ball have all but vanished.

Having bowed to reader pressure (temporarily at least) to continue to show videos of demolition gone wrong, here’s one from the (fairly recent) archives displaying at least one reason why the crawler crane and ball combination gave way to the high reach excavator in the ongoing evolution of demolition equipment.

A crawler crane and wrecking ball was (and still is) an excellent demolition tool in the right hands. Sadly, these are NOT the right hands.

Again in the video we see an undercut taking place. Sit the crane up on a ramp so it can reach the top and the job is easy, but be lazy, as this is, and you get danger.

I don’t understand why that part of the building was left standing but i agree with Oliver!
I have watched my brother-in law freeball chimneys much bigger than that with no trouble at all.

This driver should have had a drag-line attached for one. for better aiming of the ball!
When the building started going, he panicked and locked the brake pedal down. The ball must have got caught on somthing-if his lock was on on the pedal (which it shoudnt have been) he couldnt drop the ball free-falling pulling the crane over.I bet those health and safety wankers had a field day.
