Implosion date set for historic Detroit hotel…

Dykon hotAfter some bureaucratic bickering, the Detroit Historic District Commission last month voted 3-1 to allow the demolition of the vacant Park Avenue Hotel.

Opened in the 1920s, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 and abandoned in 2003, the 13-story, one-time hotel with 225 rooms at 2643 Park in Detroit’s Cass Corridor is on a plot the Ilitch family’s Olympia Development is eyeing for a new Detroit Red Wings arena loading dock.

With demolition approved, an implosion date has been set for 8am (local time) on July 11.

The Park Avenue Hotel’s neighbour, the Eddystone, is slated for preservation and redevelopment as an apartment complex.
