Fire hits Grand Rapids demo firm…

Owner estimates damages of $1 million.

Officials say a fire at a Grand Rapids demolition and salvage business that sent a large plume of smoke wafting over parts of the city caused an estimated $1 million in damage.

The fire was reported at Pitsch Companies. Witnesses reported explosions authorities say were from oxygen, propane and acetylene tanks.

No injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were believed involved, but area residents were advised to close windows and stay in their homes.

Pitsch owner Lewis Pitsch told WOOD-TV that the fire caused about $1 million in damages, including a shop for the maintenance department and equipment inside.

The cause wasn’t immediately known.
