Simon Barlow steps down

Simon Barlow has stepped down as both chairman of the National Demolition Training Group and second vice president of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors.

The news comes as Barlow’s Rye Demolition company appoints administrators to oversee the company’s liquidation.

Barlow was (and is) passionate about demolition training. So his decision to leave his NDTG post will have been a difficult one.

There were also those that believed Barlow might leapfrog the incumbent vice president into the role of NFDC president, much as current Federation president John Lynch did almost a year ago.

Barlow’s departure once again throws the NFDC’s usual presidential succession into turmoil.

In 2018, president Paul Brown was ousted with former president David Keane stepping in as caretaker to steady the ship. The presidency was then expected to pass to Martin O’Donnell but his company – KDC – was acquired by waste management giant Veolia, rendering him ineligible and thrusting Keltbray’s Holly Price prematurely into the limelight.

NRMM with Tim Burnhope of JCB

It has been described as “the most important legislation the construction industry will ever face”. The Non-Road Mobile Machinery consultation is taking place right now. And the legislation that will emerge in the wake of that consultation will shape how the sector is powered in years and decades to come.

To discuss this vital consultation and likely impact, we will be joined by Tim Burnhope, group director of JCB Special Projects, a man who is working closely with the UK Government on NRMM.

DO NOT miss this important live broadcast, and please take the opportunity to ask questions and take part.

The cull continues

First Squibb, then McCormack, Wooldridge, Blucon and Rye. And now Essex-based Type Ten Limited has gone to the great demolition graveyard.

The company appointed a voluntary liquidator on 10 February.

According to an estimated statement of affairs listed at Companies House, the company was showing a £2,471,539 deficiency in its accounts when Begbies Traynor was appointed as liquidators.

Type Ten Limited was previously known as Pristine London Limited but changed its name in April 2022. A company called Pristine London Demolition Limited that is registered at the same address is still showing as active.

The demise of Type Ten Limited will create less of a ripple than Squibb and Rye. But this latest liquidation is the sixth in the space of just four months, marking late 2023/early 2024 as surely the worst period for company closures in demolition history.
