Divestiture fells AstraZeneca facility…

The Avlon Works facility in Avonmouth has witnessed an impressive controlled explosive demolition event.

The purpose of the blast was to bring down the main building, a four-storey, 2,500 ton steel-frame structure covering nearly 1,900 square metres of the site.

The demolition was carried out by PDC Ltd working alongside Divestiture at the 40-hectare Avlon Works, a pharmaceutical processing site that was previously operated by AstraZeneca.

The blast was seven months int he preparation and Explosive involved 300 kg of explosives. To aid with dust mitigation and suppression, 44 IBCs were filled with water and the explosives were placed inside to displace some 44 tonnes of water at the time of the blast.
