CMEC dances into Stoke…

Contractor starts work on nightclub demolition.

Crews from CMEC Demolition have started to remove an iconic nightclub from the Stoke city skyline.

Thousands of revellers who frequented The Place, in Hanley, will be sad to see the venue – which attracted some of the biggest stars in the music industry – brought to the ground.

But the building on Bryan Street, which was more recently home to The Factory nightspot, Bunker 13, a rock club, and Adventures In Lust, a swingers’ club, will be flattened within 12 weeks, with plans for the site to be transformed into a pay-and-display car park.

“We didn’t realise the importance of the nightclub until a few weeks ago. We were amazed to find out that it used to have a membership of almost 40,000,” says CMEC contracts manager Robin Bourne. “Over the next 12 weeks a team of eight will strip everything, the timber, plasterboard, fixtures and fittings, until it is a shell, and then the building will be pulled down.”

During its heyday, The Place – which opened its doors in 1963 – attracted revellers from across the country and played host to renowned artists, including The Who, David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Elton John.
