CDI eyes Edison plant…

Explosive demolition the safe option, says Loizeaux.

The old DTE power plant in Marysville, which has been in the process of slow motion demolition for months now, could be on its way down much more quickly.

Mark Loizeaux, the owner of Controlled Demolition Inc. addressed the Marysville City Council at its regular meeting on May 26 about the possibility of imploding the structure.

“The structure lends itself to explosives demolition,” Loizeaux said. “It means it’s too tall for men to reach safely with the equipment they have on site. The alternative is to get on top of the structure and bring it down piecemeal, literally dismantling it. That puts workers in high places for extended periods of time on the chimneys. As you know, it gets breezy here, which presents a clear and present risk to workers at higher elevations.

“We’ve done our assessment. We’re waiting now for Site Tech to come back to us and let us know when they’re going to be finished with the environmental remediation, and when they have clearance from the state and federal agencies that oversee that.”

Site Tech is the firm that has been doing the remediation work and the site and the piece-by-piece demolition work to date.

“At that point, we’ll do our final assessment of the structure, once we can get in and see the things they’ve opened up during the remediation effort,” said Loizeaux.
