King’s Point reign at an end…

Reading regeneration to continue with demolition of eyesore tower block.

The building that stares down over Reading town centre with sad blue eyes could be gone before long if Jersey-based developers get their way.

Reading planners will be presented with an application to demolish King’s Point in King’s Road in the town centre and replace it with a block of 109 flats rising at one point to 19 storeys on the bank of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

The applicants are Carrigmay Developments (Jersey) Limited and the architects are Assael.

Council planning officers are not offering any recommendation on the plan yet because they are still in discussion with the applicants on the details which they say should all be available at the planning committee on Wednesday, June 3.

The proposal is for a development with nine, 11 and 12 storeys on the lower part of the building rising to 19 storeys at its highest point.

If it gets the green light, this will be the latest stage in the town’s redevelopment which is being spearheaded by another major demolition project being carried out by Carey Group. You can read more about this here.
