Big job, big breaker…

R Thornton Demolition brings out the big Sandhurst guns.

Sandhurst5800-164An impressive 5.8 tonne breaker supplied by UK Attachment Rental Specialist Sandhurst Equipment Rental, has recently been hard at work – this time in the North East for Morpeth’s R Thornton Demolition, during a dock extension contract near Hartlepool, for Able UK.

R Thornton Demolition were engaged by Able UK at a dry dock extension, where it is planned four off-shore drilling platforms will eventually be decommissioned.

ABLE Seaton Port (ASP) is located on the North East Coast close to the mouth of the River Tees and covers 51 hectares (126 acres) including a 10 Hectare (25 acre) dry dock – one of the world’s largest!

To accommodate the decommissioning of the drilling platforms a working dry dock within the complex, normally used for dismantling ships, was being extended inland and thousands of cubic metres of tough concrete had to be broken up and removed to a strict time schedule.

To break out the concrete Thornton’s Contract manager, Nick Heads, called upon Sandhurst’s local Newcastle rental centre, as he needed a very high performance breaker to match a 60 Tonne Cat 365C.

Sandhurst recommended an Atlas Copco HB5800 from their rental fleet and predicted the formidable combination of powerful Cat and breaker would produce the results Thornton expected.

Drawing upon Sandhurst’s experience and recommendation, Thornton’s were delighted when they achieved the projected 800m3 output per day, which kept them right on schedule.

“Matching our 60 Tonne Cat 365 with Sandhurst’s big Atlas Copco breaker turned out to be the perfect combination of two immensely powerful pieces of equipment” said R Thornton’s Nick Heads, “and exactly what we needed to complete the job in six weeks of hard breaking. We turned to Sandhurst because we could be confident they would send us a heavy-duty breaker that would do the job and once again they came up trumps. They also provided their usual excellent on-site support throughout the contract”.

Sandhurst operates a dedicated excavator attachment rental service, featuring over 30 different attachment types and fitting all excavators, from its Rental Centres covering the UK.
