Things that go bump in the day…

Ghostly goings on at century-old Osceola Inn.

In the process of the demolition of the historic Osceola Inn in downtown Reed City, some of the workers have reported unexplained phenomenon at the property.

The kind that involve the Inn’s long-rumoured permanent residents, the ones many, over the course of a century, have reported seeing, feeling, or even hearing.

It is the kind of rumor Reed City City Manager Ron Howell heard when he began his duties as the city manager two years ago. He had never lived in Reed City but soon heard ghost stories about the abandoned Inn.

“At the end of our first progress meeting with the demolition crew, among a room of engineers and contractors, I could not help myself and asked them their official position regarding the ghosts of the hotel,” said Howell.

He was stunned by the response. Howell said there were “smiles all around the room” from the table of people hired to tear down the property. Howell said contractors spoke up and shared stories of a supernatural nature while on the job.

In one case, Howell shares a story from a contractor who experienced doors shutting behind her routinely on the third floor, where she was alone conducting a survey.

Two separate contractors told stories of encounters in the basement, with looming, dark shadows while they were by themselves.

Howell said one of the younger workers was also in the basement and came out quickly with a look of disbelief on his face and told his supervisor he needed a minute to settle down and said, “something’s not right in that basement.”
