Crew unearths body in fire-damaged Minneapolis building.
Demolition was halted on the site of Wednesday’s building explosion after crews discovered a body in the rubble.
A KARE 11 photojournalist was videotaping the demolition in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood when work came to a sudden halt and a tarp was rushed in to the site. Fire officials have confirmed that the body was found shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday. Officials have not identified the body.
At a press conference Thursday afternoon Minneapolis Fire Chief John Fruetel told reporters that at least 14 people were injured and two men were unaccounted for. They have been identified as Mrimri Farah and Ahmad Ali. Farah was staying with Ali temporarily. It is not known if either men are the victim that was found in the rubble.
While no official cause has been determined Fruetel says investigators are focusing on the possibility the powerful explosion and raging fire is related to an issue with natural gas. He says witnesses reported smelling gas and described a fireball that would be consistent with a natural gas explosion.
