Video – Amelia Earhart bridge is down…

Atchison’s old Amelia Earhart Bridge now resting in Missouri River after blasting

Demolition crews today used a linear shaped charge to bring down the two-lane bridge’s high-truss steel. The bridge, which was built in 1938, spanned across the river from Kansas to Missouri.

“The demolition went as planned,” said Kimberly Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The implosion took a mere few seconds to bring down the steel structure of the bridge. The bridge deck had been removed before the implosion.

Demolition crews will use explosives two more times to remove bridge piers in the Missouri River. The next blast is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday.
