Dore & Associates in race against time.

Employees from the company demolishing the old Consumers Energy building in downtown Jackson have concerns a part of the structure will “buckle” and fall on a nearby church.

The building, which crews have been demolishing since earlier this year, sits about 40 feet from the First Congregational Church on Jackson Street.

“It’s leaning really bad, it looks like it might buckle,” Dore and Associates employee Richard Glover said.

Glover said crews plan to use a crane and pull the part of the leaning structure away from the direction of the church. It is expected that the steel part of the structure will come down today.

The building has been plagued by problems. A May 31 fire of debris in the building stopped work for the day, but officials said it did not delay demolition.
