Houston set for store implosion…

Houston’s original department store scheduled for blast.

A scheduled implosion next month will destroy the building that used to house Houston’s first department store.

The building at 1110 Main Street was most recently a Macy’s location, but is remembered by longtime Houstonians as the downtown Foley’s, the city’s first department store.

The owner announced earlier this year that the building would be demolished to make way for new offices.

The demolition is scheduled for September 22nd just after sunrise.

METRO Spokesman Jerome Gray says the implosion is significant for the transit agency because it’s adjacent to the light rail line.

“In preparation for it, there are a number of things we have to do as it relates to the rail line. So we’re going to be closing down the rail line that Friday evening. It will be closed throughout the weekend. We will use what we typically do with the closure, something called bus bridges for people who will be riding the line, a few blocks out they will be able to access buses to get to where they need to go.”
