Triple-Trouble: quake building costs escalate…

Cost of demolishing quake-hit Virginia building triple original estimates.

Demolition of the historic Levy Building in Culpepper, Virginia – and related work – will cost at least $163,000, according to a report going before the Culpeper Town Council Finance Committee this week. That’s more than triple original estimates.

Who ultimately picks up the tab for the job remains unknown.

A town summary of charges for last year’s demolition of the earthquake-damaged building includes 15 different invoices from contractor MD Russell of Boston, Va. totaling $138,128 as of December 6, 2011. That does not include an additional $24,991 of additional expenses not yet posted at that time.

The report was generated at the finance committee’s request last month that staff provides a detailed account of expenses the town has incurred as a result of the August 23 earthquake.

The largest single invoice from MD Russell invoice, $31,500, dated Sept. 9 was for “partial billing for 75 percent (completion) of the demolition.”

A $20,000 invoice, dated Nov. 16, involved stabilization of adjoining buildings.
