Photo of top down demolition displays scant regard for operator safety.

“How did they get up there?” screams the headline in a UK newspaper that ran this photo of a top down demolition project in Eastern China.

Of course, we all know exactly how they got up there. But here in the demolition business, we’re rather more concerned at how they’re staying up there.

Judging purely by this photograph, there appears to be no edge protection to prevent the two excavators plunging from the 18-storey block. This alone led one UK contractor to quip: “Someone needs to start work on translating the NFDC’s top down guidance notes“.
