MLK bridge demolition set for Spring…

Date set for end to Indiana bridge saga.

Demolition of the Martin Luther King Bridge will now take place in the spring, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Jim Pinkerton, spokesman for INDOT’s LaPorte District, confirmed the delays early Wednesday. The work began in mid-October, but INDOT and contractor Dunnet Bay Construction Co. quickly began discussions about delaying the $3.18 million project.

The delay will allow fewer traffic restrictions on the Borman Expressway, which passes under the bridge.

“We didn’t ask them not to do this so we could avoid more road construction,” Pinkerton said. “It just gives motorists six months of unrestricted travel.”

The work is expected to be complete in July, the same end date planned when the work began in October.
