Iowa flexes its mussels

Bridge demolition could be delayed by presence of molluscs.

The Blackhawk Bridge over the Des Moines River needs to come down, but not before a mussel survey is conducted.

The bridge, originally constructed in 1935, has been closed since 1986 due to disrepair.

In order to demolish the Blackhawk Bridge, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires a reconnaissance mussel survey and relocation, which will be conducted by Ecological Specialists, Inc.

If a significant number of mussels are encountered, the IDNR will require them to be moved before demolition can begin.

Herberger Construction Co., Inc. of Indianola was the low bidder to complete the demolition once the mussel survey is finished.
