Booted subcontractor back on site…

Lack of insurance does not deter contractor’s unexpected return.

The owner of a demolition company thrown off the Natick High School building project last week for not having workers’ compensation insurance is still on the job, doing the same work for the general contractor.

Bob Brait, project manager for general contractor Brait Builders of Marshfield, said he rehired Joseph Montalto to work directly for his company until Brait can hire a new demolition and site maintenance subcontractor.

Montalto is the president of Atlantic Dismantling and Site Construction Inc. of Woburn. The company was kicked off the project Oct. 19 after a state inspector told Brait that Montalto’s company did not have the proper insurance.

“Based on what the state said, Atlantic is no longer on the site,” Brait said. “We’re getting proposals from site contractors to finish the job.”

In the meantime, Brait said Montalto and a few other members of Atlantic Site and Dismantling have returned to the project as a stop-gap until a new subcontractor is hired.

“It’s a couple of their management guys that know the site,” Brait said. “You need to make a smooth transition, and you need somebody who knows the site inside and out. They are working now for us directly, until we can get somebody permanently.”
