November date set for Mohave blast…

Mohave skyline set to change in November blast that will take place behind closed doors.

The Mohave Generating Station will disappear from view in November with the implosion of its two boiler structures. The structures are the only vestiges of the power plant that can be seen from a distance, after the 152 metre (500-foot) stack was imploded in March. The 1,580 megawatt coal-fired facility closed on New Year’s Eve 2005. Demolition began in late 2009.

Most of the work being performed is behind the facility’s gates and fences and out of public view. This summer, crews demolished the MGS administration, payroll, maintenance, and security buildings, along with the facility’s machine shop.

Unlike the stack implosion, the implosion of the boiler structures will not be a public event on the grounds of the power plant, but will obviously be visible for miles around. An area from the ground level to 60 feet high has been cleared.
