Buckled crane halts demolition works…

Contract halts in downtown Wheeling as tower crane jib fails.

A several story tall tower crane working on demolition at the former Heritage Port Business Center on Main St. in Wheeling bent and twisted at the elbow portion of the arm Thursday.

Demolition was halted by All Crane Rental out of Columbus, Ohio, a worker said, until another crane could be brought in to get the other out of the compromising position. The crane did not appear to be leaning on the building.

GreenTrac LLC of Illinois is handling the demolition and a crane from ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. of Columbus, Ohio, was brought in Thursday to remove the damaged piece of equipment.

Main Street Bank President Rich Lucas, whose local company owns a 30 percent share of the property, told The Intelligencer in a phone message Thursday: “I got a call from the project manager, absolutely no one was hurt – equipment failure. Life goes on today with a new crane.”
