Jaya report to strengthen future laws…
Report into fatal collapse will help strengthen future Malaysian demolition law.
The comprehensive report on the collapse of the Jaya Supermarket building was today presented to and accepted by the cabinet. Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the investigation committee had worked on four terms of reference.
They were to investigate the cause of collapse, identify the parties involved and their role, examine whether the existing laws, regulations, guidelines and code of practice had been complied with and make recommendations to prevent future recurrence of such incidents.

Many thanks for the update John. This was a tragic incident and I for one am delighted that the Government has seized the opportunity to research this thoroughly and to (hopefully) ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

The Government have carried out an investigation after initially blaming the workers for the tragedy and the findings are due any day now. The national press are calling for changes to the legislation and are looking at legislation around the world to see what can be adapted, or adopted to suit the country. Leading demolition consultants have, I understand, spoken to the press and are awaiting a response as to whether they are required to assist with the process.
