Work underway on Schlitz brewery demolition…

Veit gets started on demolition of 123-year old brewery building.

Regardless of whether you prefer the tepid ale consumed on this side of the Atlantic, or the insipid beers used to wash down cholesterol-overload meals on the other, the sight of a brewery being demolished will bring no joy to any real demolition man’s heart.

But that is precisely what is happening to the 123-year-old brew house in Schlitz Park in Milwaukee, famous for giving the world Schlitz malt liquor together with some top-notch advertising.

The brew house demolition is part of a $22 million project that includes renovating a neighboring building in the former brewery to become UMB Fund Services’ new Milwaukee headquarters.

The demolition comes after decades of attempts to preserve the building, which was built to brew Schlitz beer and was not economically feasible to restore for modern commercial use, said John Grunau, of the Schlitz Park owners group. The floors, for example, were not built with rebar and cannot support the weight needed for modern commerce, he said. Also, staircases were built too steep for modern building codes.
