I was introduced recently to a man I had never previously met. The person doing the introduction said: “This is Mark Anthony of DemolitionNews. He’s not well-liked in the demolition industry because he has a nasty habit of telling the truth.”
I think he meant it as a compliment and that is certainly how I am taking it.
But he was right. I have been described as a “disgrace to the industry” and worse. Demolition contractors have been advised and even warned about doing business with me. I have been barred from industry events, and I no longer receive communications from many of those that purport to represent the industry, even though DemolitionNews is far and away the biggest demolition media outlet in the world.
As a result, I am an outcast. A pariah.
But allow me to let you in on a little secret. Across the span of more than 36 years as a professional journalist, I have been threatened with legal action four times. None of those cases ever proceeded because, while my words may have caused discomfort, upset, outrage and offence, they were always, ALWAYS factual.
