
This week, apparently, is European Week for Waste Reduction.
Cue the usual fanfare about recycling, reusing, reducing embodied carbon, and saving the planet one crushed lump of concrete at a time. You can almost hear the circular economy crowd revving up for another round of LinkedIn posts.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m all for reducing waste. I’d love to see more steel reused, more materials diverted from landfill, and more intelligent thought given to what happens after the demolition dust settles. But let’s be honest. When most of us in demolition or construction hear the word “waste”, we don’t picture a skip full of reusable rubble. We picture the other kind of waste. The kind you can’t put in a recycling bin. The kind that’s quietly bleeding this industry dry.
