Families pay tribute to beloved grandfathers killed in demolition accident.

Police have named the two men who tragically died in an explosion at the former SSI site in Redcar.

John Mackay, 49, and Tommy Williams, 65, died in an incident at the South Bank site on September 19. IT is understood that Tommy Williams was part of the John F. Hut team while John Mackay was employed by Nationwide Platforms.

Their devastated families have now released photos and paid tribute to the men.

Superintendent Tariq Ali, of Cleveland Police , said: “Both Tommy and John’s family and friends are dealing with the devastation of losing them and I would ask that people respect their privacy at this extremely difficult time.

“They are being supported by specialist family liaison officers.”

The men’s bodies were recovered from the site on Wednesday evening after it was initially considered too dangerous for emergency services to retrieve them.
