Squatters’ narrow escape…

House demolition begins with two people still inside.

There was a major snag Tuesday morning when a backhoe started tearing down a northside San Angelo home — there were two people inside.

The house was called in for demolition by the owner, who lives out of town. Soon after the demolition began about 9:30 am, two people came out of the house, stopping the demolition.

There were no injuries, said Samantha Schwartz, fire investigator and dangerous buildings investigator with the San Angelo Fire Department. She identified the two people as squatters. One of them was arrested on outstanding warrants.

It is unknown what will happen to the other person, as Schwartz said that will be a discussion between that person and the homeowner.

Their identities were not released.
