Victim of US bridge collapse named…

Investigation ongoing after “pancake collapse” of Hopple Bridge.

The worker who died when a I-75 overpass that was being demolished collapsed late Monday has been identified as transportation officials continue investigating the cause of the accident.

Brandon William Carl, 35, of Augusta, Ky., was killed in the Hopple Bridge collapse, according to the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office. He was inside a backhoe when the bridge buckled, officials said.

The “catastrophic pancake collapse” happened about 10:30 p.m. Monday as a crew prepared for demolition of the old Hopple Street overpass, according to a statement from city officials. The collapse led to major traffic snarls during Tuesday morning rush hour.

The Cincinnati office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Tuesday it has opened an investigation into Carl’s death.
