Baltimore to use public bidding process…
Baltimore reacts to “no-bid” furore with public bid order.
Having seen her city let a recent contract for a demolition contract prior to the construction of a casino without going through the usual public bidding process, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon has ordered the city’s quasi-public development agency to award demolition contracts through public bidding.
The move follows an acknowledgment by the Baltimore Development Corporation that it gave out a no-bid contract for the demolition of a building at the site of Baltimore’s future casino.

There wasn’t anything wrong with the building structurally speaking. It was occupied by a building material recycling company up to a few days before the demolition

I was in that very same building about a month ago. It housed a really cool non profit operation. They recycle building material. I had some doors in a office building I am getting ready to tear down. They came in with an experienced and fully insured crew and took everything reusable out of the building. Molding, carpeting, furniture etc. then they turn around and give them to the poor or sell them. Then they give me a receipt so I can write it off of my taxes as a charitable donation.
Take a guess at what their most sought after and sale able item is.

That sounds like a superb charitable operation – Clean up the city and help the city’s less fortunate at the same time. Any idea where I can find more information on that?

In light of the current comments that are going on regarding the US demolition industries bidding practices the mayor’s decision was most certainly a way to save the city more money. This should be an interesting case study to follow and learn “what not to do”……
It is rather odd that her reason for the public re-bid was based on the fact that she “acted in the interest of public health and safety”….this comment is to say the least a little confusing on my end…??
I also would like to take this time to congratulate this site as not only a professional way to debate demolition issues but also offer “added value” solutions to today’s demolition problems. Our group is looking forward to contributing comments and ideas from our US point of view. We hope our comments and ideas are part of the solutions and not part of the problems that are affecting the international demolition community.
